The Eagleston Holly is a naturally occurring hybrid of two native hollies: Dahoon Holly and American Holly.

It is a superb choice for a low-maintenance, evergreen tree or large shrub. It boasts a naturally neat, pyramidal form with dense foliage and an abundance of bright red berries that persist through winter, providing a festive touch and valuable food source for birds. This adaptable holly thrives in a variety of conditions and is an excellent choice for screens, hedges, or as a striking specimen.  

Size at Maturity: 20-30 feet tall, 10-15 feet wide.

Life Cycle: Perennial  

Bloom Season: Spring (inconspicuous white flowers)  

Sunlight Requirements: Full sun to part shade  

Soil Texture: Adaptable to a variety of soils, but prefers moist, well-drained conditions.  

Soil pH: Acidic to slightly alkaline (5.5 - 7.5)

Moisture Requirements: Moderate; drought tolerant once established.  

Tolerance to Salt Spray: Moderate

Recommended Landscape Uses: Screens, hedges, specimen tree, foundation planting, wildlife gardens.  

Maintenance Tips: Minimal pruning required to maintain its natural shape. Can be pruned to create a formal hedge if desired.

Considerations:

Deer and/or Rabbit Resistance: Moderate

Edible: No. Berries are mildly toxic to humans.

Medicinal Uses: Some traditional medicinal uses for related holly species, but not specifically for Eagleston Holly.

Toxicity to Pets: Berries can cause vomiting and diarrhea if ingested by pets.

Florida Native Companion Plants: Wax Myrtle ( Morella cerifera ), Southern Magnolia ( Magnolia grandiflora ), and Yaupon Holly ( Ilex vomitoria )

Wildlife Benefit: Provides food and shelter for birds. Attracts pollinators to its flowers.
